「レディ・プレイヤー１」のあらすじ
2045年。環境汚染や気候変動、政治の機能不全により世界は荒廃していた。その為スラム街で暮らさざるを得ない状況に陥った人類の多くは現実逃避し、「オアシス」と呼ばれる仮想現実の世界に入り浸っていた。
現在オアシス内では創始者であるジェームズ・ハリデー亡き後に公表された彼の遺言により、勝者にオアシスの所有権と5000億ドルものハリデーの遺産が授与されるアノラック・ゲームが開催されていた。
ハリデーがオアシス内に隠したとされるイースターエッグを探すエッグ・ハンターが日々3つの鍵を手にする為の関門となるゲームに挑んでいた。
オハイオ州のスラムに住む若者ウェイド・ワッツも勝者となるべく日々奮闘していたが、ゲームにはオアシスの独占を欲す世界2位の大企業IOI社社長ノーラン・ソレントが送りこんだ参加者もいた。
ウェイドは第一の関門を突破するが、現実世界でも彼に魔の手が及び、レジスタンスのアルテミスやオンライン仲間たちと共にソレントの陰謀に立ち向かっていく事となる。

原作と同様、映画では1980年代の大衆文化に対するオマージュが数多く盛り込まれています。特に1980年代から90年代の映画・アニメ・ビデオゲーム作品が数多く登場します。
スピルバーグとプロデューサー陣は、クロスオーバーのための著作権交渉に数年を費やしたそうです。
そしてなんと著作権の80%を獲得してしまったそうですよ。
一方で、原作には1980年代にスピルバーグがヒットさせた『E.T.』のエイリアンや『レイダース/失われたアーク《聖櫃》』の主人公インディアナ・ジョーンズが登場しますが、映画には出てきません。
その理由について、スピルバーグは「（自作への言及が）自惚れによるものだと批判されることを回避するため」と語っているそうです。
ただデロリアンだけは原作者のクラインから説得を受けて登場させることにしたんだとか。
また、原作では主人公がウルトラマンに変身しますが、映画では登場しません。
というのも円谷プロダクションが海外の権利問題を抱えているために使用できなかったらしいです。少し残念ですね。
